H is for Horned Toad. It is Wyoming’s state reptile and is the only lizard species in Wyoming that bears its young alive. It feeds on ants and crickets.

G is for Grand Teton. It is the highest peak in the Teton range and is the most photographed mountain peak in Wyoming. It stands at 13,775 feet above sea level and is the second highest peak in Wyoming.

F is for Flaming Gorge. It is Wyoming’s largest reservoir, on the Green River on the Wyoming-Utah border. It has over 360 miles of shoreline.

E is for Elk. They are related to deer but are larger animals that roam the mountains and high meadows of Wyoming. The Shawnee Native Americans called the elk “Wapiti.”

D is for Devil’s Tower. It is an igneous rock formation, sacred to many Indian tribes, and was the United States First National Monument. It is 867 feet tall and the flat top is about the size of a football field.

C is for Cutthroat Trout. There are four species of this colorful native trout in Wyoming and all feature an orange slash on their jawline. You will find them in the creeks and rivers across much of the state.

They were once thought extinct until their rediscovery outside the town of Meeteetse, Wyoming in 1981. One of the most endangered mammals in North America, they live in prairie dog towns.

Sometimes mistakenly called a buffalo, it is Wyoming’s state mammal and the symbol on Wyoming’s state flag. It is also the heaviest land animal in North America.

In 2014 I was attacked by a grizzly bear while archery hunting. I sold the story to Wyoming Wildlife Magazine and the article is out in the January 2018 edition. I hope you will check it out.
