The Guardians love their charges. Their love stems from a deep, visceral longing for reality. They long to experience flesh and blood. To taste, to touch, to smell. They want to walk and be rained upon, to feel the biting nip of the winter wind. They want to feel the vibrant euphoria of love, and the bitter pang of loss. They don’t know it, but they are in “training”. In the end, when they are ready, when their charge dies, the guardians become the soul of a newly born child; they get to become real.
The beauty in passing through the stages of ghost to life to eternity is to experience the increasing “reality” of each of those worlds. First, as ghosts; as Guardians. Next, as real beings. Finally, as Eldar passes beyond the veil of death at the end of his life, he discovers in eternity that it’s not like the ghostly world of demons and Guardians, but a real, corporate world where his senses are heightened beyond the world of the living. Love is not just an emotion, but a real thing to be touched, tasted, and embraced with all the senses. There is no loss; no pain; no longing; no hatred; no hurt; no evil. The absence of evil is what characterizes the life after death.
The Guardians, as they look into the window of reality wishing for the chance to experience the living senses, have no idea that they will gain that chance one day. Their feelings are like those of us who are living now: we have no idea what eternal life will be like; cannot grasp the sensations beyond the physical. We are only looking in the window. But oh, like peering into the window of toys on display at the old store during a wintry night at Christmas, we can imagine what it would be like to be inside, playing among the toys. And one day, we get the chance to go inside. Led by the hand of the Messiah, we enter in, and find what we’ve been longing for, the essence that fills the emptiness within. The answer we seek is found, in Eternity, where all knowledge is gained, all questions answered, and all the circles of worlds become one. Free to move throughout each of the circles now, unfettered by any of the constraints we experienced in those worlds. Free, real, yet unseen by those who have yet to reach the place we have finally come home to. Eternal life. Ahhhh. At last.
